Friday's Charleston Challenge was great fun so thanks to all the contestants for entertaining us all so well. It was a close run thing with the 'clapometer' barely detecting a difference in the audience applause. After a second round of applause it was Aila who came out tops winning the competition for the first time. Our new 'Chiswick Strut' was also a great success and looks like becoming a regular feature in the social dancing every Friday.

The British 10k London Run (updated: 05/07/05)
On Sunday Christi completed the British 10k London Run to raise money for her charity the National Pyramid Trust. The charity works with children who are withdrawn, shy, lacking in confidence, going through difficulties at home, or are victims of bullying. Christi managed to raise over 300 pounds through sponsorship and the 12 strong group of NPT runners raised over 3000 for the charity.
Christi was accompanied on the run by fellow dancer Shona Van Beers. Many thanks to everybody in the swing community who sponsored Christi and Shona. The race was won by world record holder Haile Gebrselassie in a time of 28mins 12secs. Christi sneakily out-sprinted Shona in a spirited race to the finshing line, completing the course in a time of about 1hr 17mins... :)

Dan & Christi's Charleston couples go though! (updated: 01/05/05)
Saturday's show was a great success with all four of Dan & Christi's Charleston couples making it through to dance another week. There was also a first for the program when one of the couples Gem & Gemma received two perfect '10' scores for the first time in the series. Paul & Natasha looked much more comfortable this week and safely made it through for another week. The Charleston created a real buzz around the studio with even Zoe Ball and Vanessa Leagh Hicks wearing Charleston dresses.
Dan & Christi's recorded demonstration of 'How to' dance the Charleston was shown at the beginning of the BBC1 program estimated to have been watched by an audience of around 9 million. They also took part in the switchover show on BBC3 being interviewed by Zoe Ball alongside the program's resident dance coaches Vanessa Leagh Hicks and Kevan Allen. Later on in the evening the results show featured a demonstration of the Lindy Hop by Ryan & Jenny. The contestants will be learning either Lindy Hop, Jitterbug, or Foxtrot for next week's program.
Further details about the program can be found on the BBC's Strictly Dance Fever web pages.
Dan & Christi Teaching 1920's Charleston on BBC1 (updated: 22/04/05)
The contestants on the BBC's Strictly Dance Fever reality TV program will be learning either 20's Charleston or Lambada next week. Dan & Christi are the program's dance coaches for the 20's Charleston and will be teaching four of the couples to do the dance. They will have two days with the contestants so will be visiting the Mansion where the program is being made on Monday 25th and Wednesday 27th April. The contestants then have a couple of days to put together their own short Charleston routines to perform for Saturday evening's show. The program will go out on BBC1 at 6:00pm on Saturday 30th April and will include a short 'How To' clip of Dan & Christi demonstrating the Charleston.
The Strictly Dance Fever program has already struck a chord within the Swing community due to the efforts of Paul Crook and Natasha Hall. Paul & Natasha got through very tough auditions to make it onto the show and have had great support form the general public. Many of us have been keenly following their progress and wish them the best of luck with their performance of the Hustle on this Saturday's program. The whole swing dance community owns them a great debt of gratitude for helping to create better awareness of Lindy Hop on mainstream television. We very much hope to see them in the house next week if they can make it through on Saturday. It's then possible that they will get the opportunity to do the Charleston the following week.
Further details about the program can be found on the BBC's Strictly Dance Fever web pages.

There will be some opportunity in the course for you to create your own sequences, and we'll be giving individual feedback throughout the course.
Details of these classes can be found on the Classes pages.

New Course Starting 10th March (updated: 09/03/05)
Shake your Thing! Movement Theory for Advanced Lindy Hoppers
Ever wondered how some people can take the Shim Sham or a Lindy Turn and make it an expression of themselves, rather than just a step that has been done a million times over? This course will look at different aspects of movement and how it applies to Lindy Hop, based on the research that Christi has done as part of her Master's in Dance Studies. We will consider elements of posture, weight, balance, and bounce within the Lindy Hop.
We will also look at the layers of movement quality that you can add to your dancing to bring purpose to your movements, and how this can affect both technique and style. We will explore these qualities within the context of common jazz steps and routines as well as within common lead and follow patterns. As one of the goals of this course is to bring unique expression to your dancing, there will also be creative elements within the course.
Details of these classes can be found on the Classes pages.
